Vehicle Transport FAQ
1. How does payment for my car transport work?
Auto shippers usually accept major credit cards like American Express, Mastercard, Discover, and Visa. They also accept cash or cashier’s check. You will need to pay a deposit before pickup that will usually be 10-25% of your total bill. At the time of delivery, you will need to pay the remainder of the bill.
2. Is there any way for me to check my car’s progress while it is being transported?
Some car transport companies offer GPS tracking for your vehicle. However, not all companies will offer this service, so you will need to check whether or not this service is available with your chosen company.
3. What happens if my car is damaged while in transit?
If your car is damaged, the shipping company will reimburse you for the damage. Thankfully, this occurs rarely.
4. Will my car be insured while it is in transit?
All car transport companies are required to have insurance. This will insure your vehicle for its value while it is in transit. However, there are certain requirements that you will need to fulfill if you wish to make a claim on any damages. Before you turn over your car, you will receive a vehicle condition report. When your car arrives at the destination, you can go over the report and record any damages to the vehicle.
5. Does the insurance cover damages or loss of personal property in my car?
No. If you leave personal belongings in your car, you do so at your own risk. Transport companies don’t carry insurance that will cover loss or damage of your personal belongings.
6. Is there someplace else that I can leave my vehicle?
Some car transport companies have terminals where you can drop your car off before shipment. Be sure to inquire about these terminals if this may affect your decision on what company to choose to transport your vehicle.
7. Will my car be picked up no matter where it is?
Sometimes heavy vehicle restrictions, narrow streets, or other factors can prohibit car shipping companies from picking up your vehicle from certain locations. When this is the case, the car shipping company will arrange a different location to pick your vehicle up. However, they will do their utmost to provide door-to-door service and pick up your vehicle no matter its location.
8. Will someone drive my car at any point during transit?
Yes. Your car will be loaded and unloaded onto a truck, which will involve driving the vehicle only a few times.
9. How long will the car shipping process take?
Several factors affect the amount of time that car shipping will take. The company you choose has a large impact on the speed of the shipment. Usually, auto transport takes between 1-3 weeks. Some companies may offer faster delivery for additional compensation. Plan for your car to be picked up within about a week after you contact your company of choice. Your car will spend another week or two being transported.
10. How early should I schedule my vehicle transport?
Attempt to schedule your vehicle transport at least a month before the date you wish it to arrive. This should ensure that your vehicle will arrive on time. When it comes to scheduling car shipping, the earlier you make plans the better.
